North Pacific Magic
Part of the reason I love the cold northern pacific is that it is rare that we get both a sunny day and a day with excellent visibility. You are always chasing those perfect conditions but when the stars alight, man, it’s the most beautiful place in the world.
The golden sunbeams highlight the curvy silhouettes of the towering kelp stipes and shine through the fronds creating an ethereal play of light and shadow. I love how patterns are made and unmade as no shapes lasts more than a few seconds. As the light filters the water, it illuminates suspended particles which sparkle and shine.
I can’t swim past the smallest piece of kelp without stopping to appreciate it’s gorgeousness (just ask my dive buddies, it takes me ages to get anywhere in Browning Pass where the kelp forests are thick and wondrous).
I paint kelp, photograph kelp, film kelp and dream of kelp. I think it is the most beautiful thing on this blue-green planet.
So what is your kelp? What hits your brain and makes it glimmer?
