Master of disguise

Scroll through this series to see the incredible colour and texture changes of a Giant Pacific Octopus.

When I came upon this octopus it was perfectly camouflaged against the reef.

When it understood it had been spotted, it went into full on intimidation colouring.

And it worked! I stopped dead in my tracks and gave it room as it flowed and moved along the reef eventually coming to rest on top of a boulder.

These incredible creatures are always amazing to encounter on a dive. Each one seemingly has a distinct personality, prefers different food and reacts differently to humans.

Some run straight for a cozy, safe nook and others, like this one, jump up on a rock and try to scare you off with billowing arms and bright white skin.

Our cephalopod cousins are incredible and like all our marine neighbours, worthy of respect ♥️
